Every good fleet needs a little chaos, and this one comes in the form of Deathtrap — a 1984 Cadillac hearse turned off-road purveyor of doom. Originally built and owned by Gambler 500 legends Jason and Wendy, Deathtrap was born when Jason (a close friend of Mitchell’s builder) couldn’t let him have all the fun. He snagged a stock hearse, cut it up, and went full Gambler.
The factory frame was reinforced with tubes and links to handle solid axles, airbags, and those massive Boggers. From hauling illegally dumped trash to hauling 30 people on its custom roof rack, Deathtrap has always commanded attention.
I first met Jason at my very first OG Gambler 500 in Oregon, and told him flat-out: if he ever sold this majestic beast, I wanted first dibs. Life changes, priorities shift — and sure enough, he called.
Now Deathtrap is in my care. The plan? Simple. Swap in Maxine’s original 12-valve Cummins, keep it automatic, ditch the Bluetooth front driveshaft for an NP271 transfer case, freshen the paint, reupholster it with a little royal flair, and then enjoy the hell out of it.
Down and dirty, loud and proud — Deathtrap lives on.
